LACSON, PING (PDR)

INDEPENDENT

RUNNING FOR President

Panfilo Morena Lacson (born on June 1, 1948 in Imus, Cavite), popularly known as Ping, is a politician and former police officer. He is a senator of the Philippines, serving until June 30, 2022.

In his 2022 presidential bid, Lacson initially ran under the banner of Partido ng Demokratikong Reporma (PDR). But on March 24, 2022, he resigned from the party after PDR dropped him as their standard-bearer. The party then endorsed Vice President Leni Robredo's candidacy. Lacson said he is "effectively an independent candidate" from that point on, but the Commission on Elections argued otherwise, saying he remains a candidate of PDR in their view.

As a policeman, Lacson rose through the ranks until he became the chief of the Philippine National Police in 1998. He was first elected to the Senate in 2001, and has served three six-year terms since. He ran for president in 2004, but placed only third in the polls.

Lacson is also a former presidential assistant on rehabilitation and recovery under President Benigno Aquino III in the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda in 2013.
